Doc Reminds C's Fans He's Still Capable Of Screwing This Up

Peter May of the Boston Globe was at the Celtics Annual Media Luncheon yesterday, and walked away with the grim, bitter warning all C's fans have been dreading:

Doc Rivers is still not only the Head Coach, but even with a roster full of future Hall of Famers, he will do everything in his power to ruin our title shot.

doc2.jpgRivers will also experiment with lineups, including one with Garnett, normally a power forward, at center, and one with Pierce or newcomer James Posey at power forward. Rivers also plans on experimenting with a three-guard lineup of Ray Allen, Pierce, and Tony Allen, or Ray Allen, Tony Allen, and newcomer Eddie House.

"We have a lot of flexibility," Rivers said.

Some of you may not have paid much attention to the C's over the past few years (and if you're not a die-hard fan, why would you have?).  If not, you've missed out on the train-wreck-like beauty of the Doc Rivers coaching experience.  His flaws are limitless.  His gameday decisions are baffling.  He's almost too terrible for words -- you just need to experience the ineptitude to truly grasp it.  With everything he's done wrong over the past few seasons, his rotation management (well, mis-management) has been one of the most frustrating.

With all of the moves Danny pulled off this past offseason, Celtics fans were not only rejoicing because we had top-quality talent, they were excited because Danny had depleted the roster to a point where the rotation was virtually set for Doc.   This was a beautiful thing.  But, and this is unfortunate, Danny saw a need for depth.  I can't argue with his logic, or his decisions.  I like the players he's been bringing in post-Garnett.

This gets disastrous right around November 2nd when the season begins.  Instead of having a solid rotation where each player knows his role and what's expected of him, each player might be playing a different position every night.   Paul Pierce at Power Forward?  Why not?  Hell, we might even get to see Rondo playing some Center this season -- it worked for Magic!

A good coach would turn this roster into a deadly, terrifying unit.  A decent coach could get these guys to the finals.  Doc Rivers?  Maybe I'm wrong, and I hope I am... but when your Head Coach is salivating about the possibility of playing his Small Forward in at the Power Forward position and throwing out a lineup of guards..... well.... HELP!?!

Its really a stretch to say a decent coach could get this roster out of the East and into the NBA Finals.

The "Big 3" thing just about never works (has it, EVER?), and it isn't likely to take Boston much further than the conference semis.

Not with Doc Rivers as head coach, anyway.

i don't fully understand why trashing doc rivers has become such a stylish thing to do. i've followed the celtics very closely over the past few seasons and i think that it is fair to question some of rivers' decisions and to be concerned about his questionable in-game adjustments. but it has become the norm to blast him in a ridiculous, out of proportion way. i don't know if it's all the bill simmons zealots or what, but people have to chill - especially if you're a celtics fan. the overly negative doc vibes are making me wonder if celtics fans are able to think for themselves anmymore or if they just follow what the other cool, "knowledgable" guy said. i mean danny ainge was getting killed before trading for garnett - locally and nationally. now what?

Danny has finally put the pieces in place to achieve the level of greatness that the Celtics are historically expected to attain. Yet, he insists on having a complete incompetent as the Head Coach. Doc is a good announcer - Period!! If anyone can detsroy the chance that the Celtics now have to be a highly competitve franchise, he will find a way. Look up the word incompetence and you'll see Doc Rivers mug-shot!!

In response to the "Big 3" never works, How about Bird, McHale, Parrish - or Cowens, White, Havlicek, Nelson - or Heinsohn, Russell, Sharman, and Cousy. Please, no more ignorant so-called Celtics fans/commentators..

When Doc is "salivating" over such possibilities, he better mean for like 5 mins per game with a 3 guard lineup. His "small ball" never worked, and actually intentionally lost us plenty a game over the past 2 years.

Starting lineup should be obvious:

Rondo
Ray Allen
Pierce
Garnett
Perkins (possibly Batista)

I can see why Doc said that. His best players are Garnett, Pierce, Ray Allen, Tony Allen, Posey and Rondo. Of the top 6 listed there is only one big man: Garnett. The would force Pierce or Posey to the other "big" spot. So while the Celtics are definitely improved, they don't have the depth at the right spots. Doc seems to be considering taking advantage of matchup problems occasionally, not full time. It has worked well for Phoenix, so it could work for Boston too.

I hate boston (LA all the way), but dont lie to yourselfyou negative dummies, that team is gonna be a POWERHOUSE. They wouldbe amongst the elite in the west among phx and them. They will dominate the east, and may win the whole thing not just the east (although in my opinion theyll win the east pretty handily and make the finals they have a good shot at the ring once there). Ihate boston but Im happy for KG, Ray and even Pierce. I wish DannyAinge was my teams GM instead of dumb Cupcake... make no mistake younegative boston punks dont deserve that team. And yes I will begetting league pass for the first time ever this year (diehard nbafan since 1981) for the nearly sole reason of watching the celticsand their 3 perfect fit superstars.Doc or no Doc, theyre gonna be aspecial team around the core 3 superstars for the next 4 or 5 years.

possibly batista?

Perk is the perfect center for this lineup, he doesnt need the ball to be effective and is a true banger. He plays great defense, rebounds, blocks shots, complements the big next to him (was al, now garnett), sets good picks, enforces/intimidates, crash offensive boards, doesnt make mistakes, 100% effort, hustles, dives, perk the stocky banger is perfect next to the lean versatile garnett, he can guard shaq while kg roams to help and swats shots, roll hard to the basket while kg works in the post, he does the little things that no one else wants to do, he's our garbage man.

I watched him singlehandedly lock down D Howard twice last year towards the end when his foot got better, and bosh once, and even Shaq he banged with and D'd up.

Batista could possibly beat out pollard at backup, perk is gonna surprise many and I hope to god he's healthy as can be and gets at least 34 minutes per game.
