Obligatory David Ortiz Updates

Papi

I guess I'm the "Late To The Party" guy this week.  Showing up just in time to make everybody uncomfortable and rehash topics that have been discussed ad nauseum all night.  But, humor me, dear readers.  I'm bringing some David Ortiz quotes with me.  I know there's not a Sox fan out there who'd shy away from a good Papi line.

While most everybody involved refused to (or "couldn't") comment about the recent threats lobbied at Manny and Cocoa  -- I guess we're taking this Boston Championship-envy to a whole new level -- David Ortiz met the question with a smile, a laugh and a joke.

“Somebody wants to hurt Papi?” Ortiz said with a laugh before the Sox’ 5-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. “If you hurt Papi, the world’s against you..."

Unfortunately, the letter's author is still at large.  Authorities interviewed a man they believe to be the culprit, but he was later released.

In other Papi news, his wrist is doing well enough that he's started swinging a bat.

“He did well, really well,” said [hitting coach] Magadan, who observed the slugger take 60 swings off a tee Monday. “Today was supposed to be an off day for David but he felt good enough where he wanted to take some more swings. So I just said, ‘Let him go at it.’ ”

“I was just looking to see if there was anything different in his swing where he might be trying to keep it from hurting, and there wasn’t,” Magadan said. “My concern is that I didn’t want him to change his swing. If he was going to take 60 swings I wanted to be sure they were 60 good swings. My job is to watch his mechanics to make sure they hadn’t changed, and they hadn’t.”

There's still no time frame set for his return, but with the Sox entrenching themselves in second-place, here's hoping that his wrist, and infectious smile, can hurry back after the All-Star break.
