Manny The Barbarian

Aaron Gettings I've had some computer issues that I doubt anybody truly cares to read about, but it made me miss some interesting things going on in the Boston sports scene. None more entertaining, puzzling and just plain bizarre than Manny Ramirez shoving Sox' traveling secretary Jack McCormick to the ground.
I've been writing fairly intensely about the C's lately (and for good reason), but now's the time to shift gears, lighten up a bit and get into Red Sox mode... and I can't imagine a better story to begin that transition than Manny turning into the Big Bad Wolf over some baseball tickets. I know I'm a little late to this party, and I don't mean to stomp a knocked-over secretary into the ground, but let me have some fun with this one.
If Manny had his own reality TV show (and I don't know that there's a human being on earth, Sox fan or not, who'd object to this) he could've opened that day's episode Real World-style:
"This is the true story... of a right-handed slugger... on a road trip... denied 16 tickets to a game... who decided to stop being laid-back... and start getting pushy... The Ramirez Realm."
This device could work when he does great things, too:
"This is the true story... of the Left Fielder... who got a late jump on the ball... but caught it at the wall... and managed to high-five a fan while in mid-air... and still double-up the runner tagging at second... The Ramirez Realm."
You have to admit, you're intrigued. In fact, you're probably writing your own in your head right now.
I've read a few articles lately from people calling for the Sox to cut ties with Manny after this season. Somehow, one minor misstep has turned him into a villain nearly overnight. Personally, I hope Manny stays in my life forever. Yeah, his personality is a puzzle wrapped in an enigma pasted on a rubik's cube (and after the Youk and McCormick incidents we can add a violent-streak to his list of quirks), but the man is 100% entertainment. Our lives, and yes, I'm speaking for all of us, are truly better because Manny is a part of them. For better or worse, the man makes us laugh, smile, cringe, dust ourselves off after he shoves us to the ground because we couldn't get him 16 tickets to that day's game, but mostly, he makes us celebrate championships.
And I can't imagine a Boston fan (particularly a Red Sox fan) who'd ever kick a guy outta town for that.
P.S. If you want a funny take on the incident, head on over to The Dugout and read "Don't Screw With A Tired Manny" -- well worth the 5 minutes of your day.
